THE MAN, THE MYTH, THE LEGEND

Charlie Cooke

KEY FORMER PLAYERTUE 4 NOV 2014

Charlie Cooke was one the most skilful and best-loved footballers ever to play for Chelsea.

Signed from Dundee in 1966, Cookie made his debut in the Fairs Cup semi-final against Barcelona. He had to wait until August to make his league debut during which he easily embarrassed England's World Cup winning centre-half Bobby Moore in scoring the winner against West Ham.

Over the next six seasons Cooke entertained the Chelsea faithful with his extravagant skills and he was a crucial part of the 1970 and 1971 cup-winning teams. His dribble and cross to set up Peter Osgood's late equaliser in the FA Cup Final will forever remain part of Chelsea folklore.

Charlie was surprisingly allowed to join Crystal Palace in 1972 but returned 18 months later. He was unable to help prevent relegation in 1975 but two years later played a part in supporting a young team win promotion. He made a handful of appearances over the next two seasons, making his 373rd and final Chelsea appearance in a memorable FA Cup win over Liverpool.

In the summer of 1978 Cooke moved to the United States where he played for several clubs before retiring. He now runs a soccer school in Ohio.
